On Sunday, I taught the second succinct bullet point of God's will for human beings: 'to love mercy.' This is revealed to us through Micah 6:8. 'Love mercy' means to have a heart full of willingness to do good for 'the other' at all times. Who is the 'other'? First, its my family/roomates, then the people at work and at church. Then people I'm aware have need in my community and around the world. There are so many examples of Lake Forest people doing this well.
I told the story of a local charity known as 'The Bin,' which exempifies 'loving mercy' in a Lake Norman sort of way. I wear a purple 'Bin' wristband because of my admiration of this group. A few years ago, Karin Solomonson (a Lake Forest peep) and some friends connected the LKN hobby of redecoration with the working poor's need for household items (all in our area). This is the big idea of The Bin. When LKN folks cast off furniture, appliances, or kitchen goods to be replaced by something newer - those things are like GOLD to many low-income people. Here's an LKN low-income person speaking about the value of The Bin to her family:
Lake Forest ministry parnters Susan Marcoccia and Jaye Soss led The Bin's way of 'loving mercy' to its current location and format on hwy 115 in Huntersville. Now, Lake Forest ministry partner Alisa Grasso is one of the board leaders. On top of being Mom, Wife, and Worker (at Lowe's) she is 'loving mercy' by providing leadership to this great ministry that 'wills good for the other' here in LKN. Here is Alisa talking about The Bin and its current needs. Perhaps you can 'love mercy' by helping at The Bin.
love the bin
love that they come get the big stuff
love that it never crosses my mind anymore to try to sell something I no longer need
love imagining a storage-unit-less society

Wonderful way to "give back to the community"! I Love what The Bin represents - Filling homes with HOPE! Being a single mom, just a few short years ago, I felt the pressure of being one week away from needing assistance. The Bin helps those in need with dignity and gives them a re-start to a life filled with HOPE.
