Did you know a Huntersville man produced a movie that was released nationally last weekend? "October Baby" was #8 in tickets sales last weekend. Cecil Stokes is a Christian who produces television shows, and this is his first feature film. It explores themes of forgiveness and the sanctity of every life, through the lens of a baby who survives an abortion attempt.
I'm hoping that 'word of mouth' generates enough interest and sales to propel the film into more theaters next month. Because the film addresses important themes from the perspective of faith AND continues the upward trajectory of 'Christian' as adjective not necessarily meaning 'poorly done' for a film. By all accounts (I have not seen this movie yet), the lead acting is first rate (including a number of actors we're all familiar with). It won the prize as Best Fiction Feature at the 2011 Red Rock Film Festival, with the lead actress taking home a Special Achievement Award for acting.
The best movie I've ever seen with a strong pro-life message is "Bella" from 2006, that also touches well on the beauty of adoption. "Bella" was an under-the-radar, high quality indie film made by Christians as well. I can't recommend it highly enough. So, I'm looking forward to seeing "October Baby" - let me know what you think when you've seen it. Its playing in Charlotte this weekend at AMC Concord Mills and Stonecrest cinemas.
