Author, speaker and Lake Forest Church friend Donald Miller writes: "I argue that right theology has no redemptive power at all, that redemptive power only comes through a relationship with Jesus. I explain why right theology has become a false idol, and when it’s used as a pacifier to make us feel right rather than redeemed, it breeds arrogance and is bait for an offensive, controlling personality. Many Christian leaders belittle other pastors and thinkers in the name of right theology. This is distracting, and by distracting I mean it’s a song and dance that distracts people from seeing Christ."
Ummm. I completely agree. I value theology, and my Reformed/Presbyterian understanding of Scripture underpins the way I teach the Bible and understand God. It's part of who I am. But I am not leading our church and teaching the Scriptures so that people will assent to one certain set of theological truths. That would be worshipping and following ideas as our end purpose. My passion is for all of us to see and know the person of Jesus more clearly, relate to Jesus more constantly in our lives, and experience salvation through trusting and following Jesus.
