Back in the fall, I quoted Jesus saying that the Kingdom of God is like 'the last will be first,' and suggested that the 'last' in today's world just might be refugees. In that same parable, Jesus also said 'I am generous.' So I asked my friends to pray about how Lake Forest Church could be 'generous' to the 'last' of these, and thus be a glimpse of the Kingdom of God.
Beyond praying, some folks did some stuff. Krista Roes held an evening discussion where we were educated on the refugee crises around the world. She then invited LFC folks to donate shoes (y'all gave hundreds of pairs) that were promptly shipped to the Greek island of Lesvos and given to barefooted Syrian immigrants. WELL DONE.
Here is a way you and I can do something more locally, THIS SUNDAY. Cheryl Spainhour was at the evening discussion, and was moved to lead us to help a local refugee community as they continue to settle in our great, hospitable country.
If you live in LKN, would you please participate and bring an item this Sunday? As a glimpse of God's Kingdom that is generous by putting those who seem last as first. Here's the deal from Cheryl:
Wanted: New or clean, gently used blankets and children’s and juniors-sized coats for the Montagnard community in Charlotte, just 20 minutes from LFC-Huntersville. There are about 1000 people originally from the mountains of Vietnam, from tribes who served alongside American soldiers during the Vietnam War. The Durham Memorial Baptist Church (off Hwy 27) serves the local Montagnard families, offering ESL and citizenship classes as well as food, clothing and furniture. LFC community members can help serve the Montagnard families by bringing a blanket or coat to LFC by Sunday Jan. 31st– just drop your donation in the marked bins in the main lobby, the children’s wing, and the box.
